Best Things To Do In Boston

Ride the Subway

No matter the itinerary you have scheduled or planned, you need to use the subway! It is a clean, quick, and easy form of transportation in the city.

Being from the south, we don’t have subways so this was for sure one of the top things to do in Boston for us! We were so surprised at how clean it was and safe! The subway comes right to the airport so it completely eliminates the need for renting a car!

Visit Fenway Park

things to do in boston for adults

Fenway Park is one of the most unique things to do in Boston because of the history. This park is monumental to the city so it is a can’t miss. If you are there in the winter, do a tour of the park. If you are visiting in summer, go to a game at the park!

We have done the tour and attended a Fenway Park game. Both are equally as fun because you can’t not appreciate the park. The fans get crazy for the Red Sox, so even if you are not a baseball fan, the games are still super fun!

Walk around Harvard University

Harvard University is a quick subway from Boston and it is completely free to walk around during the day. Harvard is beautiful and open to the public so it is a great way to spend your day.

We loved walking this campus because it was a nice escape from the city while still seeing a big piece of Boston. Visit the book store while you are walking around as well.

If you want more historical things to do in Boston while visiting Harvard, George Washington’s Headquarters is not too far of a walk from the campus. The yellow house is so cute and you are able to walk around for free!

Take a Stroll around Boston Common

Boston Common is a large park in the center of the city filled with history, paved walking paths, ponds, and ducks. It is an adorable park to walk around that gives great views of the city. There is so much history packed in this park.

We loved this park. For being in a large city, it makes it feel natural. There were so many spots to view, sit down, or take pictures. A park is a great option when visiting with your kids or large groups of people.

Eat & Drink in the North End

The North End should be at the top of your things to do in Boston itinerary! These couple streets are filled with amazing food, drinks, and desserts. Winter or summer, there is great food to stop and eat on your trip.

None of our many trips to the city skipped the North End. Pizza, subs, desserts, pasta, you name it, the North End has it ready for you! The town is like a Little Italy: filled with Italian shops and cobblestone.

Follow the Freedom Trail

The Freedom Trail can be done for free or tour guided, it is completely up to you. The trail is one of the most historical things to do in Boston, the trail stops at the various sites all over the city. The stops are marked on the sidewalks so if you want a free activity, this one is a can’t miss!

We opted for the cheap version of the Freedom Trail and toured it ourselves. It stops at all the major landmarks so it was super easy to follow and not get lost.

Visit the Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park

unique things to do in boston

The views of the harbor at the Christopher Columbus Park are one of the best things to do in Boston Massachusetts. Park yourself on a bench and watch one of the many boats go in and out of the harbour.

This is truly one of the favorite spots simply because it is by the water. There is nothing better than a city on the water. There are so many boats going in and out in the both the summer and winter so don’t miss out!

Walk Down Beacon Hill

things to do in boston

Beacon Hill is absolutely one of the top things to do in Boston areas because you cannot find it anywhere else. For being so close to the city, you would not believe these beautiful, brick homes were right there. There are shops and homes all free to walk around in Beacon Hill. It is super close to Boston Common and the city.

We never skip Beacon Hill when building our itinerary. When walking down the cobblestone streets, you truly feel like you are out of the city (but so close!!). A pipe dream is to live here one day 😉

Walk Down the Charles River

cheap things to do in boston

The Charles River is so much bigger than you would think because of how long it is. There is a very nice walking path to follow down the river. If you are on the city side, you can see MIT. If you are on the MIT side, you can see the beautiful skyline.

We love walking the Charles River for the views and to get some steps in on our trip to Boston. It can get cold in the winter months so bundle up. If you visit in the summer, it will be warm and beautiful!

Visit the New England Boston Holocaust Memorial

The Holocaust Memorial is a must see in Boston that will for sure bring you to tears. It is a very special memorial located in the center of the city. It is amazingly built and cannot be missed.

We walked through the Holocaust Memorial on our first visit to and it was amazing. It is one of the free things to do in Boston that is so special.
